Memorial Garden Stones
Permanent Landscape Memorials by WLDflora
There are places in a landscape that hold memory.
At WLDflora, we create custom memorial garden stones by core drilling natural boulders to respectfully contain cremation ashes. These stones become permanent features within private gardens, estates, farms, and meaningful outdoor spaces and integrated into living landscapes. This is remembrance set in stone.
Our Process
1. Consultation & Site Selection
We begin with a private consultation to discuss:
Intended location (garden, woodland edge, meadow, estate grounds)
Type and size of stone
Full ash containment or partial ash placement
Future planting or landscape integration
We evaluate drainage, soil conditions, permanence, and long-term stability of the installation site.
2. Stone Selection
We primarily use:
Granite (Recommended)
Extremely durable and non-porous
Resistant to freeze/thaw cycles
Structurally stable for long-term ash containment
Naturally beautiful and timeless
Natural Fieldstone or Customer-Selected Boulder
Clients may choose a stone from:
Their property
A meaningful location
Our curated stone yard
Each stone is evaluated for density, fracture lines, and structural integrity before drilling. We do not use soft sedimentary stone (like limestone) for full ash containment due to porosity and long-term weathering concerns unless specified and accepted by the client.
3. Core Drilling & Ash Placement
Using professional-grade core drilling equipment, we:
Drill a vertical cavity into the stone
Clean and seal the interior
Insert ashes within a contained and protected chamber
Seal the cavity permanently with stone-matched material
The opening is structurally sealed and designed to remain intact through seasonal expansion and contraction.
This process ensures:
No surface exposure
No visible ash chamber
Long-term structural integrity
4. Installation Process
Once prepared, the memorial stone is installed using proper landscape construction methods:
Excavation to stable subgrade
Compacted gravel base
Drainage consideration
Equipment placement for larger boulders
Final grading and planting integration
The stone becomes part of the land — not simply placed, but set.
Optional enhancements:
Native plant memorial gardens
Perennial borders
Evergreen anchor plantings
Engraving (if desired)
Pathways or seating areas
Legal Considerations
Cremation ashes (cremains) are legally permitted for private placement in most areas when:
The property owner grants consent
The ashes are not placed in public waterways or protected land
No state or local ordinance prohibits private placement
In Kentucky and Indiana, cremated remains are generally considered sterile and non-hazardous.
However:
Clients are responsible for confirming family agreement
Written authorization for ash placement is required
WLDflora does not assume responsibility for legal disputes among heirs
We strongly recommend clients consult local regulations if installing outside of private residential property.
We do not perform memorial installations in public parks, protected wetlands, or conservation lands without formal authorization.
Types of Memorial Installations
• Private Garden Memorial Stone
• Estate Landscape Anchor Stone
• Farm or Meadow Remembrance Boulder
• Woodland Edge Marker

Each installation is unique to the landscape and the life remembered.
Permanence & Future Considerations
Before installation, we discuss:
Property transfer implications
Future land development
Access considerations
Whether a location will remain undisturbed
Memorial stones are intended to remain in place indefinitely. Relocation after installation can be difficult and costly but possible.
This is why thoughtful site selection is essential.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the ash visible?
No. The ash is fully contained and permanently sealed inside the stone.
Can the stone be engraved?
Yes. Engraving can be arranged depending on stone type.
Can multiple individuals be placed within one stone?
Yes, if size and structural capacity allow.
Can we use a stone already on our property?
Often yes. We inspect it first to ensure suitability.
Our Approach
We approach memorial installations with:
Discretion
Structural precision
Landscape expertise
Respect for family dynamics
Long-term environmental awareness
We do not rush this process.
The goal is to create a place that feels natural — as though it has always belonged there.
